52. The actions of Tirpitz and her escorting destroyers in March 1942 used up 8,230 metric tons of fuel oil, which greatly reduced the available fuel supply. It took the Germans three months to replenish the fuel spent in the attempt to intercept two Allied convoys which left Iceland on 27 June bound for the Soviet Union.

53. In July 1944 Victorious transferred to the Far East, and the squadron attacked the Nicobar Islands and, on 24 January 1945, the important Palembang oil refineries as part of Operation ‘Meridian’. Tomkinson was killed leading his squadron against airfields on Okinawa on 26 March 1945. He was 28 years old.
